Interview with Telümehtår

Tell us about your latest release: the main concept; what fans should expect; what were/are your goals with it:

The Well, this second release, unveils some unconscious voices, a scream that was untill then silent. As almost ten years stood between the first demo and this release, the question “what I have to tell” was in my mind, in order to avoid a pale repetition of the first one.

Did you have a specific sound in mind when you formed the band, or did that grow and evolve as you played together?

As Telümehtår is born from one person mind, and I’d say by hazard, the will was to be as close as possible of “what black metal is”. It was like finding what were the archetypes of this music. Not in a analytic way of process, but in a feeling one. Focusing on pure primal matter, minimalistic, that could be seen as an symbolic gesture of the first step of a musical alchemistry journey, the nigredo: calcination of unformed matter. And then see the result in my own “laboratory”. The form is always created by the unformed. As the conscious comes from the unconscious.

How does your writing process normally work out?

Inspiration came by itself, and i’m attached to think about the music, and for instance, guitar riffs before even thinking about lyrics. For The Well, each song scheme was almost found and then put on a recording as a reminder. Then from this scheme, arrangements came quickly.
It’s when all the album was there that the lyrics found their way. To me, the symbolic langage of music speaks by itself.

What are your ambitions and how far do you want to push your band?

I don’t have a lot of ambition: our modern society focuses on productivity and make us think that ambition is the key to success. I’m not here to change the world, or to change the face of music. I’m one amongst thousands of artists, musicians. It is a point of view, a way of seeing things. The only goal is that music “speak” for others. It is hte only achievement.

What are your influences/musical references and the impact those same influences had in your sound?

From the beggining, for Telümehtår, it was, to me, to be close enough to the “first wave” of black metal. Emperor, Ulver, Darkthrone were bands amongst others that, were a real influence. The intention was not so much to copy as try to comprehend “the spirit” that animated these works.

What’s next for you?

Hopefully we could get the chance to mount a proper line up to play a series of shows. It is in our projects to record again the first demo and propose a modern version.
