Interview with Vetrarnott
Tell us about your latest release: the main concept; what fans should expect; what were/are your goals with it:
Scion is an EP about the Scandinavian mythology: the three songs in it revolve around the three children of Loki and Angrboða. Both thematically and musically it functions as a tribute to the Scandinavian bands we love, mostly the Norwegian ones. If I’d have to say what genre it is I’d say it’s Progressive Black Metal. It has both raw and more articulate parts. I think that if you try and focus on just the small details that define a sub-genre it becomes hard to see what makes it a sub-genre in the first place, so I’ll leave it at that. Our goals are to play the EP (along with some new songs) live as much as possible and, while the listeners have a taste of what our music sounds like, to continue working on our next release.
Did you have a specific sound in mind when you formed the band, or did that grow and evolve as you played together?
I already had a vision of what kind of sound I wanted, but by both rehearsing and recording the songs we refined what my vision was. It wasn’t forced of course, but it was all planned, one way or the other.
How does your writing process normally work out?
Very often, as I practice, I find myself playing something really interesting, or thinking about a specific theme or idea I want to put in music. Later on, I build the rest of the song by adding to it and I start discussing the writing with my bandmates. From that point, we work together on improving everything and making it work. A fairly simple writing process I’d say.
What are your ambitions and how far do you want to push your band?
We really enjoy playing and we want to do it as much and as far as we can and in the best possible way. I’d say we want to get better and better with our performances and releases through the years and have a blast in the meantime.
What are your influences/musical references and the impact those same influences had in your sound?
Our biggest inspiration are Enslaved. Every single release from them had a big impact on me and I’d say that in Scion it shows. Our band’s name is a tribute to them, too: Vetrarnótt is a song from their first album. Apart from that, there are a lot of influences, from the music genre to the lyrics. I’d say that the most important ones are Draugr, Bathory, Mithotyn, Darkthrone and so on so forth, I’d say most will tell what are the other influences.
What’s next for you?
We are planning to play some concerts through 2019. I will also say that our next release will come relatively soon. Not late, nor early, but precisely when it means to.
